It is generally agreed that a solution common to many of the serious problems facing our natural and social environment is to motivate enough people to act in concert. History shows us that simple solutions, such as small changes in our behaviour, when embraced simultaneously by millions of us, can have profound effects. There is an urgent need to engage great numbers of the public around the world with concise information about our common problems, recommended solutions, and news of positive campaigns and popular efforts. But commanding the public's attention is increasingly difficult in a world with corporate media industries, a profit-driven and sensational entertainment culture, and exorbitantly-priced access to mass media. Fierce competition for the public's attention among sports corporations, movie industries, and manufacturers everywhere advertising to consumers, makes it extremely difficult to promote positive causes or attract the cooperation and activism of a critical mass of people.   The romantic and inspirational image of a sailing ship on the high seas is a proven stimulant for human imagination. White sails over a boundless blue sea conjure feelings of adventure, confidence, and courage, even in those who have never sailed. Our Greenheart ships will offer a bold, attractive example of sustainability principles in action. Our photogenic ports of call, the unique design with solar power plants, and the charitable mission of the Greenheart Project, will ensure us broad access to mass media around the world, and the ability to produce captivating publicity of our own. We intend to leverage this high-profile visibility to bring important issues to the public, and be the flagship for popular movements to achieve solutions. Our promotional capacity will also help our network of supporters, associates, and sponsors advance their causes. We expect to dedicate a large portion of our time to exploiting the positive publicity Greenheart will generate, directly to the public via the Internet and by way of media outlets to the world.

Programs involved in development of communities often fail because they are financially unsustainable, are unparticipatory on a local level and inflexible. Most of the time the skills transfer process doesn't match the real needs of the communities and programs and these programs are often manipulated by outside influences. Poor communities need to build their organizational capacity to solve their problems, in a mutual share of skills and knowledge.   Trainees from impoverished coastal communities with sailing traditions will be hired as crew on the first vessel and given on-the-job training and instruction. These trainees will also mould the operation of the boats to meet the particular needs of their communities. Greenheart intends to remain active in promoting this type of sail & solar appropriate technology for application in selected regions. Data from the operations and the crew will be available to relevant research agencies to further establish the viability of this new type of marine transport.
